The 2023 edition of the Windy City Weasels’ signature tournament will be held in person at the Kimpton Gray Chicago, September 30th and  October 1st!

The Weasel Moot XVII champion will be given the coveted title of “Alpha Weasel” and join an elite cast of Alpha Weasels, replacing reigning Face to Face champion Seren Kwok (2022). 

Schedule of events

Rounds 1 and 2 will be untimed. Round 3 will have a fixed end time, unknown to the players. All three rounds will be held (in the Field Room) at the Kimpton Gray122 W. Monroe St., Chicago, IL 60603. 

Optional Welcome Events: Friday, September 29th

  • 1:30pm CDT: Lunch at Demera (4801 N Broadway)
  • 7:30pm CDT: Welcome Dinner at Minghin (333 Benton Place, Suite 300)
  • 10:00pm(ish) CDT: Karaoke and games at the Kimpton Gray 

Round 1: Saturday, September 30th 

  • 8:00am CDT: Check-In
  • 9:00am CDT: Game Start

Round 2: Saturday, September 30th

  • 5:00pm CDT: Check-In
  • 6:00pm CDT: Game Start

Round 3: Sunday, October 1st

  • 8:00am CDT: Check-In
  • 9:00am CDT: Game Start
  • 2:00pm – 4:00pm CDT: Game End

Awards to be announced 15 minutes after the conclusion of Round 3.

Scoring and Rules

Weasel Moot XVII will be played using the Open Tribute scoring system. This system is also used in the Virtual Diplomacy League (VDL). The incentives in Open Tribute scoring can be summarized as “top the board if possible, with as many supply centers as possible, otherwise survive and keep the board-topper as small as possible.”

All participants of Weasel Moot must follow the NADF Code of Conduct. 

Technology

Weasel Moot XVII will be played on traditional gaming boards, however separate adjudications will be recorded using Backstabbr as a virtual tabletop for assistance with video coverage from the Diplomacy Broadcast Network.

LODGING, PARKING, AND PUBLIC TRANSIT

VENUE

Weasel Moot XVII will be hosted in the Field Room at the Kimpton Gray Chicago at 122 W. Monroe St., Chicago, IL 60603. This hotel is in the heart of downtown Chicago near the Lyric Opera House, Willis (Sears) Tower, and Millennium Park.  Check out a quick video about the hotel renovation.

HOTEL ROOM BLOCK

King and double queen rooms are $170/night. This is an VERY reasonable price for downtown Chicago.  Payment is due at check-in.

PARKING

  • Kimpton Gray Chicago offers Valet Parking with unlimited in-and-out privileges for $75 a day. There may be cheaper options through parking services such as SpotHero.
  • We recommend using Public Transportation when possible. Two CTA L Train stops are within 1/4 mile from the Hotel.  CTA buses run within blocks of the hotel.

PUBLIC TRANSIT

  • Directions from Chicago – O’Hare International Airport (ORD)Take the CTA Blue Line Train from O’Hare to the Monroe Stop and walk west on Monroe for 1 block.
  • Directions from Chicago Midway (MDW): Take the CTA Orange Line Train from Midway to the Quincy Stop and walk north on Wells for 1 block to Monroe. Go right at Monroe for 1 block to the hotel.

As an NADF sanctioned tournament, Weasel Moot will use the official NADF  Code of Conduct which can be found here. This Code of Conduct is extremely important to the Windy City Weasels. In addition to providing guidance on appropriate behaviors, the Code of Conduct serves as a consciousness raiser. It alerts everyone that there is a cultural problem that needs to be addressed and encourages players to actively encourage diversity and inclusivity which are essential to the growth of this hobby.

The sooner you can let us know the better as it makes it easier to plan. 

There are will be three rounds in total, two on Saturday and one on Sunday. All three rounds will count for score. There is no drop round. Full details of the schedule of events can be found here

  1. Download and install the Discord app  and join the NADF Discord Server. Most if not all of the pre-tournament announcements will be centrally posted in the Weasel Moot channel.  Also, introduce yourself and get to know your competition. We are a welcoming community!
  2. If you are NEW to the game of Diplomacy, welcome! Former Windy City Weasel Jorge Zhang has created a Diplomacy Resources website with some great resources for newer players to help get them started from a strategic standpoint. Also, feel free to ask questions or for advice in Discord!

Founded in 2006, the Windy City Weasels are one of the most active Diplomacy leagues in North America. We are known for our fierce competition, strong traditions, upstanding character, and the propensity for Turkey to open to Armenia. Full Members can play in league games and qualify for the Weasel Royale championship game!
