Moot XI Results

Moot XI is in the books!  Mike French, a traveling Weasel from St. Louis, took the title with a composite score of 114.876.  Mike’s tournament included a solo as Austria in Round 1, only the second Austrian solo in tournament history and 20th solo overall (only the ninth in tournaments that were not also World Diplomacy Championships).  Mike’s solo was especially remarkable in that it was accomplished with no fleets (believe your eyes by clicking here).

Finishing in second place was Eric Grinnell, who made a spirited charge in the final round, closing the gap to under 4 points with 1 year to play.  Third place was taken by Alpha Weasel θ John Gramila (winner of Weasel Moot VIII).

In addition to the win, place, and show trophies, some players earned special awards for their distinctive play:

Icarus: Jorge Zhang (R2 B2), for reaching nine centers as Italy by the end of 1904 and finishing with just one, a fleet in the Adriatic, when the game drew in Spring, 1912.
Larazus: Kevin O’Kelley (R4 B3), for losing all of his home centers and still getting a build.  Kevin, as France, had only Portugal and Spain after 1902.  In 1905, he regained Marseilles and then, in 1906, he both held onto all three centers and cleared Marseilles.  He dropped an army and retook Brest, finishing with four centers (and a bright future) when the game drew in Spring, 1908.

The best country awards went to the following:

Austria: Mike French (R1 B2), 100.000
England: Matt Sundstrom (R2 B2),  49.128
France: Mick Johnson (R4 B1), 59.504
Germany: Eric Grinnell (R1 B3), 38.942
Italy: Chris Glassburn (R1 B1), 32.400
Russia: John Gramila (R3 B2), 64.222
Turkey: Ted McClelland (R3 B3), 39.286

Many interesting things were said at Moot XI.  These were some of the most memorable:

Siobhan Nolen (R1 B4): “This is the most clusterfucky board. They either need to decide to kill me and let Jorge solo, or Bryan needs to get his shit together and work with me.”
David Hafner (R1 B1) of his 1-center England with a fleet in York: “I don’t see growth potential here.”
Eric Grinnell (R1 B1): “I really enjoyed that game. People laughed at my jokes. They thought I was a nice guy.”
Jake Trotta (R2 B1) opening his negotiations with old pal Chris Kelly in S01: “Ya ya ya, the usual bullshit.”
Siobhan Nolen (R2 B1) of Jake Trotta: “I told him if he engages in fuckery, I’m throwing it to Mike French.”
Chris Glassburn (R2 B2), wistfully, after overhearing Siobhan: “Ah, engagements in fuckery…”
Jake Trotta (R2 B1): “Hey, if it doesn’t work out, teachable moment.”
Siobhan Nolen (R3 B1), after 7 failed draw votes on R2 B1, which ended by stasis: “I’m a little traumatized by draw votes right now.”
John Gramila (R3 B2): “Who needs 18 centers when you can have a friend?”
Guy Loftin and Jeff Goss (R4 B3), where Guy (Germany) was surprised by Jeff’s (England) opening moves:
Guy: “England, you want to talk?”
Jeff: “I’m sorry.”
Guy: “Well if you really are sorry, maybe we don’t need to talk.”
Guy Loftin (R4 B3): “When you’re ready to talk to the good angel, let me know.”

This recap is fantastic. Next best thing to live commentary.

  2. Chris Kelly

“When you’re ready to talk to the good angel, let me know” is an amazing quote (and one I will probably steal).

Though, as someone who has been burdened with a nickname & is therefore looking to similarly burden others, “Teachable Moment Trotta” does have some potential…

Had quite a few of those this weekend.

  3. Bryan Pravel

Brandon, Jim, and Brian, thanks for putting on a fun tournament. I had a blast on both of my boards this weekend and a great time overall. I appreciate all the hard work that went into making this tournament a success.

      Also, Siobhan stabbed first. 🙂

In fairness, this game ended early, with a draw vote at the end of 1905. No telling how things might have declined after that…
