The Weekly Weasel — Week of Jan. 25

Read on for the latest news from the Weasels. (And speaking of reading, I just finished Waterloo by Bernard Cornwell. I highly recommend it to anyone who’s interested in the Napoleonic Wars, enjoys military history, and/or appreciates well written non-fiction.)

Yin, Yang and Gramila
Balance in the universe will be restored on Saturday when Humboldt Park, which lost the Riot Fest music festival last year, lands a Diplomacy game at John Gramila’s home. The game begins at 11 a.m. and is currently full. Standbys are always welcome so let me know if you’d like to get on the waiting list in case a spot opens.

Heffernan Trumps Gramila
John’s game filled quickly. We posted it on January 6, and it was full by the 16th.

That’s fast. But Josh Heffernan’s game on February 27 filled in a blur. We opened his game on Wednesday night. Less than 24 hours later, it was full. The lineup includes three-time Alpha Weasel Chris Martin, who will be in town for work and a hockey game.

Weeknight House Game?
Peter Lokken is willing and able to host a weeknight house game at his home in Logan Square. His schedule is fluid right now, so we think it would be better to plan with a pretty short horizon. If you’d be interested in playing Dip on weeknight in the next couple of weeks, speak up and we’ll get something on the schedule.

[Sultry British Accent] Five Months to the Deadline
Five months from today, we’ll be in the thick of the 2016 World Diplomacy Championship at Weasel Moot X, June 24-26 at Roosevelt University’s vertical campus, 425 S. Wabash. Now is the time to build up your hobby capital with your loved ones. Get the event on your calendar, and start working on clearing the weekend for YOU.

First Board Nearly Full for February’s Red Wednesday
In February, Red Wednesday will move to the third Wednesday, February 17 at the Red Lion in Lincoln Square. As always, the game is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. and will end no later than 11. Six players are signed up already. Perhaps we can field two boards again.

Note that we expect to be back to our regularly scheduled second Wednesday in March.

CODCon Dates Set
Our 10th annual CODCon Open Diplomacy tournament will be April 9-10 at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn. This will be a great opportunity to tune up for the world championship in June!

Standbys Needed
The January 30 game at John Gramila’s home in Humboldt Park is full, but standbys are needed, just in case.

Hosts Also Needed
We could also use some hosts for March. Josh’s game filled in less than 24 hours. Yours likely will fill, too, so speak up if you’d like to host a game on a Saturday or Sunday in March.

Dues Still Due
Your 2016 dues are now due! Once again, we’re charging $25 for members and $10 for students. Dues will get you a combined $15 off our two tournaments–CODCon in April ($5) and the World Diplomacy Championship at Weasel Moot X in June ($10)–plus eligibility for our season-ending awards and the Weasel Royale. And you’ll also help us maintain the website and keep our Meetup page.

You can PayPal your dues to wcwsneak@gmail.com. For your convenience, just use the button on this page. And please pay up soon. We depleted our treasury when we paid the first installment on the meeting space for WDC, and we have some bills to pay…

Thank you to the nine Weasels who have paid up thus far, including Brandon Fogel and Josh Heffernan.

Help Needed!

  • Database. We still are looking for someone who can convert Matt’s rating system to a searchable, web-based database. Please email us at wcwsneak@gmail.com if you can help or have questions. (Ben DiPaola has nibbled on this one…)

That’s all for this week. See you soon.

Jim
