The Weekly Weasel — Week of Dec. 23

From our warren to yours, have a merry Christmas and a great New Year. And now, here’s the latest news from the Weasels.

O Come, O Come, Eamonuel
Eamon Driscoll’s return to the table last week at the Red Lion was both joyful and triumphant. He last played on Opening Night in Season Eight, pulling double duty in that two-board session. Shortly afterward, he left for the Ukraine, where he spent the past year teaching English.

He’s back now for the holidays, and he wasted no time signing up for a game. His effort was one for the carols, as he guided Austria to a nine-center shared board-top. Check out the game summary here.

Driscoll leaves for an English-teaching gig in Russia on Jan. 9. We may organize one more chance for him to play before he goes.

Jingle Brawls
Beefy Nate Cockerill is still in first in the Bar Room Brawl Series after our two holiday games, but his lead over Matt Sundstrom has shrunk to just 1 4points. Check out the standings. Nineteen players have competed in the six Series games so far.

CODCon is Coming
The Weasels will return to the CODCon gaming convention at the College of DuPage April 5-6 for our eighth annual CODCon Open Diplomacy tournament. Make your plans to join us. Last year was a down year for our minor tournament as we managed just 15 players and five boards, but we expect to be back up in the seven- to nine-board range this year.

One More Gift beneath the Tree?
We’re in the midst of a nice streak where we’ve fielded a game per week for five straight weeks. We’ll run the streak to six this weekend. But, we’re not satisfied with that. We’re talking about organizing another game for the holidays. If you’re interested in playing either this weekend or next week, please let me know. We’re considering opening a second board for Saturday at Matt Sundstrom’s home in Glenview. Alternatively, we’re kicking around a game in Evanston on one of the first four days of the New Year. Who’s interested?

Upcoming Games

  • Dec. 28 at Matt Sundstrom’s home in Glenview, starting at 11 a.m. Full. Standbys welcome.
  • Jan. 11 at Matt Kade’s home in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, starting at 11 a.m. Full. Standbys welcome.
  • Jan. 19 at Dan Burgess’ home in Downers Grove, starting at 11 a.m. Have three.

Sign up for games here, on Meetup, or by emailing your faithful War Weasel (which is now Dan Burgess, danburgess67@gmail.com).

Important Dates

  • April 5-6: The eighth annual CODCon Open Diplomacy tournament at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn.

Dues
We hope to send out our annual e-appeal for 2014 dues in the next month or two. In the meantime, you can use the PayPal link we set up for 2013 to pay your 2014 dues. We’re still charging $25, $10 if you’re a student. Eleven people have already paid their dues, including David St. John. Thanks, David!

That’s all for this week.

Jim
