The Weekly Weasel — Week of Aug. 26

Read on for the latest news from the Weasels

Black Sea Bounces and Other Superstitions
If you believe that Diplomacy is a game without luck, then it shouldn’t bother you that we’ve scheduled our first house game of Season Nine for Friday the 13th. Make your plans to join us for a time-limited game in Little Italy. Only three spots remain.

Opening Night is Next Week
Season Nine will open Sept. 4 at the Red Lion in Lincoln Square. We’re fielding two boards that night: Our 2013 Bar Room Brawl Championship game, which will start at 6 p.m., and our first regular season board of Season Nine. That game will start between 6 and 6:30.

All seven Brawlers in the championship game have confirmed; nevertheless, alternates Keith Ammann, Peter Lokken and Chris Kelly may not want to make other plans. Or better still, they may want to plan to play on the regular season board so they’re on hand if needed.

We still need two more for the regular season opener, so sign up if you’re interested.

The Fifth Annual Undercard game at the Weasel Royale
Once again, the 2013 Weasel Royale club championship game is set for Oct. 26 at Dan Burgess’ home in Downers Grove. For the fifth straight year, we’re also fielding an Undercard game, which will count toward the Season Nine standings. (The Royale and the Brawl are premiere games and thus do not count toward the standings.) In three of the previous four years, the player who topped the Undercard went on to qualify for the next season’s Royale. This year, it could be you, but only if you sign up.

We’ll start the Royale with the selection ceremony at 11 a.m. The Undercard will begin right after that.

Upcoming Games

  • Sept. 4 at the Red Lion in Lincoln Square at 6ish until no later than 11 p.m. Have five.
  • Sept. 13 at Jim O’Kelley’s home in Little Italy, starting at 6:30 p.m. until no later than midnight. Have four.
  • Oct. 26, the Undercard game at the Weasel Royale, starting at 11 a.m. Have one (or two, if we force Dan to play).

Sign up for games here, on Meetup, or by emailing your faithful War Weasel (which is Nate Cockerill, nathancockerill@yahoo.com for the time being).

Important Dates

  • Sept. 4: Opening Night and the Bar Room Brawl Championship.
  • Oct. 26: The 2013 Weasel Royale club championship and the Fifth Annual Undercard Game.

Just Dues It
Thank you to the 27 Weasels who paid dues in 2013. We appreciate your support.

If you’d like to support the Weasels but missed out on the opportunity to receive a discount at our tournaments or qualify for an annual Weasels club award or a spot in the Weasel Royale club championship, then we’ll gladly take your $25 ($10 if you’re a student) now and apply it toward the 2014 calendar-year dues.

Your dues help pay for our annual club awards, the Meetup site, our website, and other club activities. Help us out by paying your dues today.  Use the PayPal link online or give your dues to a Sneak member.

That’s all for this week. Time permitting, next week we’ll handicap the Brawl field. You won’t want to miss that!

No mention of John Gramila as Chicago’s only presence in Paris? Or of Edi’s amazing negotiation with Cyrille as Edi staved off certain destruction on the top board?

  2. Jim O'Kelley

You’re right. Half-assed reporting on my part. But as I’ve said before, I’m not that committed to this job.

Seventy-five players at last weekend’s World Dip Con in Paris, including our own John Gramila, who finished 45th in the standings but first, I’m sure, in the hearts of the local women.

They totaled 43 boards in the five rounds. The final standings are here: http://www.world-diplomacy-database.com/php/results/tournament_class.php?id_tournament=1413. British player Toby Harris also posted a fantastic write-up in the WDC 2013 group on Facebook. Check it out when you get a chance. It’s here, https://www.facebook.com/groups/471071716271852/566953163350373/?notif_t=group_activity.

I did intend to cover WDC in the Weekly Weasel, and in fact, I was updating the Sneak on the tournament and Gramila’s progress over the weekend. But in the rush to finish WW in the time between Patrick going to bed and Meghan returning from her run, I just plum forgot.

Next year’s WDC will be at Dixie Con in Chapel Hill over Memorial Day weekend. Then it’s on to Milan in 2015.
