The Weekly Weasel — Week of June 24

Here’s the latest news from the Weasels.

It’s Martin in a Photo Finish
We’ve had close finishes before. Back in 2008, Mike French edged Matt Sundstrom by 2 points–the difference that year between a six-way draw and a five-way–to win his second straight CODCon title. In 2011, the CODCon and Weasel Moot titles were decided by fewer than 9 points combined. But the finish at this year’s Weasel Moot tops them all.

Two-time champion Chris Martin of the Potomac Tea & Knife Society recorded the only solo on the first day of play and carried a hefty lead into Sunday’s third and final round. But young Jarred Potter, a rising college freshman from Greenfield, Indiana, playing in his first tournament, soloed on Martin’s board to throw the outcome in doubt.

Scoring is based on best two of three rounds. Each scored 100 points for his solo. Potter earned his second score Saturday night, splitting a board with Edi Birsan and Don Glass. Each took 11 centers. (The fourth party to their draw, by the way, was poor Ulysses Peterson. He finished with one center, Portugal, and no units.) The shared top scored 33.242 points for Potter, giving him 133.242 points for the tournament. Meanwhile, in Round 1, Martin finished second with 9 centers to Birsan’s 10, racking up 33.75 points to give him 133.75 for the tournament and a margin of victory of 0.508 points.

Check out the recap, final standings and supply center charts.

The Den of Records
We’ve updated the Den of Records to reflect Martin’s victory and both solos. The Den lists all solos from both league and tournament play, our tournament champions, league champions, rookies of the year, and all our league best country awards. Check it out.
