Season Eight opened Thursday night with two boards at Guthrie’s Tavern. Thirteen players turned out for Opening Night, including four new Weasels and guest of honor Peter McNamara, the Australian national who was visiting from the Bay Area.
Nate Cockerill picked up right where he left off last season. The Season Seven leader with five board tops picked up another one in Game No. 195, edging McNamara 12 to 10. Chris Kelly, meanwhile, took the board top in Game No. 194, his second top with the Weasels in six games played.
Game No. 194, which featured four new players and Eamon Driscoll pulling double duty, ended after Fall 1904. The final center counts were:
England (Jenny Terrill): 4; 8.889 points.
France (James Wilde): 5; 13.889 points.
Germany (Laura Kliman): 5; 13.889 points.
Italy (Eamon Driscoll): 5; 13.889 points.
Russia (Chris Kelly): 8; 35.556 points.
Turkey (Daniel Baker): 4; 8.889 points.
England (Peter Lokken): 1; 0.338 points.
France (Simon Marcelis): 5; 8.446 points.
Germany (Peter McNamara): 10; 33.784 points.
Italy (Eamon Driscoll): 5; 8.446 points.
Russia (Aaron Bernhardt): 1; 0.338 points.
Turkey (John Gramila): 0; 0.000 points.
The supply center charts are here, and the World Diplomacy Database has been updated. Next up for the Weasels is another bar game, this one at the Red Lion in Lincoln Square on Wednesday, Sept. 26. We hope you’ll make your plans to join us. In the meantime, let’s hear from the players.

Before “edging”, insert “comfortably”. Nate’s board top was never in serious danger. In F02 there was an Austrian army in SIL, and a Russian army in PRU. Nate (presumably) promised support into BER, Aaron dutifully ordered PRU-BER and watched as SIL walked unopposed into WAR. And after he won a 50-50 guess the following year, the rest of the field was playing for second.
In my little corner, Peter told me how Simon in France had only played a few games, but had done well in them and needed to be taken down a notch. But then I thought that this was coming from someone who made the top board of WDC at his last at-bat and perhaps it was him who needed to be taken down a notch. In the end, it didn’t feel as though much happened in the west, so many potential combinations remained largely unexplored.
A shout out should go to all those who helped on the two boards, which includes not only Eamon but Peter’s recruitment and teaching of the new players, and Peter and John taking over as replacement players when people had to leave.
I took a happy snap of the occasion, which can be viewed at http://bartogian.wordpress.com/2012/09/17/bartogian-visits-guthries/
Thanks, Peter, for the endgame statement and the pic, which now adorns the article.
I really wanted to work with Aaron in this game as we hadn’t been able to get things cooking in the past. After seeing that he and John (Turkey) weren’t hitting it off, I decided to roll with him. Eamon and I had a an alliance but he wasn’t able to get set up on Turkey due to an encroaching French fleet.
In 03 I had every on intention of following through in the attack on Germany but then saw I could possibly take Warsaw, Rum and Bulg with three open home centers to boot. I thought to myself well damnit it’s a bar game and I went for the growth. In a longer game I would’ve worked with Russia in order to continue across the line. One event to note this game year Lokken forgot to write an English disband and had to pull the farthest from home alphabetically. This enticed Simon in France to move on him.
Eamon only went “south” on me once taking Bulg due to feeling he wasn’t growing enough even after I had offered him Trieste. After much discussion I convinced him to stay on board have Trieste, keep Bulg and support him into Smyrna.
After that it he was able to recapture Tunis as Peter M was blitzing through the French countryside and eventually take Marseilles as well, but time was ticking and I grabbed Venice and Bulgaria in a last turn dot grab.
It was great to game with Peter again, have an Austrian boardtop, and see so many new faces.
It was a great kickoff to our 2013 season!
