The World Diplomacy Championship at Weasel Moot VI is less than two weeks away. I hope you’re planning to join us for a round or more.
World Dip Con kicks off Aug. 10 at 9:45 a.m. and continues through Sunday afternoon, Aug. 12. There will be a total of five rounds: two on Friday, two on Saturday, and the final round on Sunday. You can find the schedule and other details here. The event will be held in the Florentine Room on the third floor of the Congress Plaza Hotel, 520 S. Michigan Ave. in Chicago. World Dip Con bounces between North America and Europe, with Australia joining the rotation every 10 years or so. In North America, the event rotates loosely among the East, Central and West regions. The venerable DixieCon in Chapel Hill, N.C., is set to bid on the event for 2014. Hopefully a West Coast tournament will step up to host in 2016. That means the earliest it potentially would be back here is in 2018.
We’re also hosting the North American Dip Con at Weasel Moot VI. It’s become the common practice to pair Dip Con with World Dip Con when the latter event is in North America. In a perfect world, Dip Con would also rotate among the East, Central and West regions. However, Tempest in a Teapot, the premier tournament of the Potomac Tea and Knife Society, is the only bidder for the 2013 event, and Dixie likely will hold it in 2014, along with World Dip Con. A West Coast event hopefully will combine it with WDC in 2016, so that means 2015 is the earliest that we potentially could host it back in Chicago.
All that is to say that the opportunity we have two weekends from now does not come around very often. It will be at least six years before we see another WDC in Chicago; at least three years before another DipCon. Our club has worked hard to bring these two events to Chicago Aug. 10-12.
