Weasels clean up at Carnage

Peter Yeargin and I traveled to Fairlee, Vt., this past weekend for the ninth annual Carnage Accords Diplomacy tournament, the final event on the 2010 Grand Prix circuit and next year’s host for the North American Diplomacy Championship. Although I’d only been to Carnage once before, it’s one of my favorite events. Getting there is a bit of a logistical challenge, but it’s totally worth the effort. Picture Guthrie’s with better lighting and people watching and a wall of windows that look out on a lake nestled in the mountains. It’s a fantastic venue, and one you can see for yourself if you join me for next year’s DipCon.

(Update from Peter) As an addition to Jim’s post here, Saturday night featured some belly dancing that I was luckily able to capture on video!  Enjoy this one!

As for the tournament, it featured seven boards and 22 players. I led after the first two rounds with a first and a second in the rank-based scoring system. Alex Amann and Conrad Woodring were right behind me with firsts and shared seconds. In Round 3, I finished third on my board; Conrad, meanwhile, topped his board to leapfrog me and win the tournament. He and I each left town with two Best Country awards.

Peter finished fourth but won the minor Nor’Easter circuit on the strength of his win in July at HuskyCon. (The other Nor’Easter events are TempleCon in Providence and the Boston Massacre.) Peter also officially wrapped up his Grand Prix title.

The top board, with Best Country awards were:

  1. Conrad Woodring (Italy, Turkey)
  2. Jim O’Kelley (Germany, Russia)
  3. Chris Martin (Austria)
  4. Peter Yeargin
  5. Andy Bartalone
  6. Chris Campbell (England)
  7. Roland Cooke (France)

It’s worth noting that Peter and I rendevoused in Manchester with four of those guys (all but Campbell, a Vermonter) for the drive to the Lake Morey Resort in Fairlee. It’s also worth noting that Martin is our Alpha Weasel alpha, Bartalone is a paid-up Weasel, and both Woodring and Cooke played at Weasel Moot IV.

The demand for rooms at next year’s DipCon will be great, so if you think you’d like to go, circle the dates now and let me know. Carnage Accords X is scheduled for Nov. 4 to 6.
