The Weekly Weasel -- Week of Sept. 10

Here's the latest news from the Weasels.

Season Eight Kicks off on Thursday!
Our eighth season of Windy City Weasels Diplomacy kicks off Thursday night at Guthrie's Tavern in Wrigleyville. We have seven, including Australian transplant Peter McNamara, who's in town from the Bay Area and is making time to play Dip with us. We're now looking for standbys or possibly a second board, so speak up if you're interested.
Our eighth season likely will be a bit of letdown compared with last year, which, of course, culminated in the world championship at Weasel Moot VI. Hard to top that. But, we expect to play a lot of Diplomacy this year, and we still have our 200th game to celebrate. Thursday's game will be our club's 194th regular season game. We should hit 200 before the New Year.
Check out the lineup for Thursday's game here.

Don't Let the Door Hit You in the Aash!
Congrats to Aash Anand on securing a job and entering the work force. Unfortunately, the recent University of Chicago graduate's new gig will take him to Denver. He leaves next week.
Aash played 23 games with the Weasels over the past three seasons and competed in three of our tournaments. He placed second at the sixth annual CODCon Open last April, and in August, he became the first Indian national to compete in a world championship while finishing a club-high ninth at WDC.
Best wishes, Buddy. We expect to see you on the tournament circuit and hope that you'll make Weasel Moot a regular stop.

Conception Deception, Oct. 6 and 7
Since last year's kick-off event at the small Conception gaming convention was such a huge success for the Weasels, with three boards including our first ever variant, we're going to do it again this year. Tony Prokes will again run standard Diplomacy on Saturday and Colonial Diplomacy on Sunday. The dates are Oct. 6 and 7, and we'll start at Noon both days. Anyone up for some Diplomacy? We have game openings. Read on for the latest news from the Weasels.

Welcome Back, Mac
Australian Peter McNamara had so much fun playing Dip with us at WDC that he's coming back for more. Business is bringing him back to town, so we're organizing a game in his honor at Guthrie's Tavern on Sept. 13. As always, it will start at 6:30 p.m. and end no later than 11. McNamara wants to see our bar game model in action so he can bring it back to the Bay Area, where the BADAssers have struggled to fill boards since hosting DipCon in April 2010.

Three years of talking and planning and organizing culminated in last weekend's smashing 22nd annual World Diplomacy Championship at Weasel Moot VI. So, now what?

For me, mostly just a lot of busy work...

Doc Binder Wins World Championship
Our 22nd world champion is a urologist from Florida and a relative newcomer to the face-to-face hobby. He picked a great time to win his first championship!

Dan Burgess was the first to arrive at my home for the Windy City Weasels’ first Diplomacy game on Sept. 10, 2005. He was half an hour early. We talked about a lot of things while we waited for the other players to arrive. (In what would become something of a tradition for our club, they were all late.)

Barfield Wins Tempest
Chris Barfield flew in from Ethiopia to participate in this year's Tempest in a Teapot in Silver Spring, Maryland. For his troubles, he got a solo in the second round and his first tournament championship.

Couldn't happen to a better person, as far as I'm concerned. I got to know him a little bit during a cigar break at WACCon a few years ago. He was working for the government of Saudi Arabia at the time, and I asked how that had happened. He explained that when the towers fell on 9-11, he decided to pursue Middle Eastern Studies and an eventual career in the Foreign Service.

He was only 13. I turn 48 tomorrow and still don't know what I want to do.

It's late, I'm late, so this will be brief.

When Bar Games Were Bar Games
Remember when we use to routinely field two boards at our bar games? Those were the days. Well, guess what? We currently have eight for next Wednesday's game at the Red Lion. Six more gives us a taste of the good old days. Who's in?

When September Ends
We pulled the plug on last Saturday's game at Peter Lokken's home as we only had five players. I read on Facebook that the Davismen showed up for the Wilsonian game at Conception. Not sure how that one turned out.
