facts about us

Our Diplomacy league is the most active in North America. We average more than two league games per month in addition to Tournament play. We score all of our games using the Sum of Squares scoring system, and each player's best three scores count toward the season standings. We are known for our fierce competition, strong traditions, upstanding character and trustworthiness, and the propensity for Turkey to open to Armenia.

Do you want to be free?

When we were negotiating or sitting alone at the table thinking about our moves, I used to get a kick out of singing Boston's song "Amanda" to Amanda Baumgartner, pictured here playing Pandemic with me and Kevin at this year's Weasel Pyle. I'm sure she hated it--I'm a terrible singer--but she was a good sport.

The 2016 Bar Room Brawl Championship

Written by

Exactly one month after its ninth annual Weasel Royale club championship game, the club will hold its fourth annual Bar Room Brawl Championship. The Brawl championship will be November 16 beginning at 6 p.m. at the Red Lion in Lincoln Square, 4749 N Rockwell. Spectators are welcome, and if there's sufficient interest, we'll field an Undercard game.

This year, the seven contestants will vie for the new Cockerill Cup. Named for the late Nate Cockerill, our friend and former Prime Weasel, the Cockerill Cup will list every Brawl champion and will be on permanent display at the Red Lion. Nate was a Lion regular and introduced his home away from home to the Weasels in June 2012. The bar has been the official home of our popular Dip and Drinks events ever since. We introduced a standing Red Wednesday game on the second Wednesday of every month in September 2014.

A look at last year's players

Season 12 opens Friday night at Brian Shelden's home near Millennium Park and will keep rolling with our first Red Wednesday of the year at the Red Lion on the 14th.

As we all look forward to another exciting season of Windy City Weasel Diplomacy, let's take a quick glance back at last year. Specifically, let's look at the distribution of last season's 58 players by the season they joined the club.

Greed is Good: The Season 11 Weasels

Written by

Brandon Fogel came within a dot and some fine print of winning four of the seven Best Country awards for Season 11. Instead, he had to settle for one Best Country and a couple of titles for a campaign that saw him top a near-record 6.5 boards while running away with the league's regular season title.

Fogel was the Weasel of the Year, amassing 149.505 points. He broke away from the pack down the stretch by topping four boards in a row and six out of seven from April 27 through August 10. Obviously, he also earned Top Weasel honors.

Throw the bums out!

Written by

Ironically, the only incumbent on the Sneak who survived the "Throw the bums out" purge* last weekend at the Weasel Pyle was the guy who occasionally shows up looking like a hobo. Even former Sneak member Kevin O'Kelly was rejected by the angry electorate.

Joining John Gramila on the Ninth Sneak will be Brian Shelden, the leading vote-getter who ran on a platform or experience--he served on the Potomac Tea & Knife Society board and also organized the New York City hobby years ago--and a pledge to help Jim O'Kelley lighten his workload; Brandon Fogel, who said he'd like to develop an app to help archive games; and Jake Trotta, who would like to work on the website.
