Our Diplomacy league is the most active in North America. We average more than two league games per month in addition to Tournament play. We score all of our games using the Sum of Squares scoring system, and each player's best three scores count toward the season standings. We are known for our fierce competition, strong traditions, upstanding character and trustworthiness, and the propensity for Turkey to open to Armenia.
The field is set for the 2013 Weasel Royale club championship game, our sixth annual championship game. We'll play the Royale on October 26 at Dan Burgess' home in Downers Grove, beginning promptly at 11 a.m. with the power selection ceremony. The seven finalists, in seed order, are:
Yesterday's eighth annual Weasel Pyle in Wayne wrapped up our eighth season of Windy City Weasels Diplomacy. We fielded 27 boards in Season Eight, with 60 players participating.
Compared with Season Seven, it was a down year. Certainly it was a step back in games played from the lofty numbers posted the past thee years, when we averaged 40 boards, but the 60 players is right where we were in Seasons Three through Six, when we averaged 62 players per year.
At yesterday's season-ending Weasel Pyle in Wayne, we elected three members to the Sixth Sneak. It was an old Iraqi-style election, as we had three candidates for three open positions. All three won seats in a clean election run by Prime Weasel Dan Burgess. He accepted email ballots in advance of the Pyle and paper ballots at the Pyle. All 27 paid-up members were eligible to vote.
Elected were incumbents Jim O'Kelley and Nate Cockerill, as well as a fresh face in Don Glass. Glass replaces Christopher M. Davis, a former Prime Weasel who stepped down after serving five years. Glass is the 14th Weasel to hold a seat on the Sneak. O'Kelley, meanwhile, is the only remaining member from the First Sneak. The sneak expanded to seven seats from five in 2011-12.
Our inaugural Bar Room Brawl championship will be decided on Sept. 4 at the Red Lion, beginning at 6 p.m. The championship game will end no later than 11 p.m. That night also will serve as our opener for Season Nine of Windy City Weasels Diplomacy.
The Bar Room Brawl game will feature the top seven brawlers from Season Eight. Their composite scores are based on their best three performances in the season's bar games. In all, we played 12 bar games in Season Eight, with 38 players participating. The qualifying Brawlers are:
We have an election to conduct next week at the Weasel Pyle. Three two-year terms on the Sneak, our governing body, will expire after the Weasel Pyle. Those terms belong to Chris Davis, Nate Cockerill and me.
Davis has already announced his retirement from public service on the Sneak. He's a former Prime Weasel who has served on all five Sneaks. His wife recently gave birth to their eighth child. Not surprisingly, he doesn't have quite as much time these days to devote to guiding our club.
The inaugural Bar Room Brawl Series concluded July 17 at the Red Lion in Lincoln Square. A total of 38 people played in the 12 games, nine of which were held at the Lion and the other three at Guthrie's Tavern in Wrigleyville. For each participant, we scored his or her best three games. The top seven, regardless of membership status, will now be invited to participate in a championship game at the Red Lion, our sponsor for the series. The championship likely will be held on a weeknight in August or September.
The top seven finishers and first three alternates are:

In Diplomacy, Mr. Calhamer designed a game that has endured for nearly 55 years. Yesterday, as news spread through the small but rabid Diplomacy community that Mr. Calhamer had passed, our Facebook newsfeeds lit up with tributes to him and testimonials about how the game had changed lives.
One of the knocks on Diplomacy is that it’s a game that ruins friendships. There is an element of betrayal in the game that can bruise feelings. But for me, Diplomacy is a game that has forged friendships.
