The Weekly Weasel -- Week of April 6

Written by

Hey, CODCon is this weekend, and here's what's going on with the Weasels.

Supersizing CODCon
Over the eight previous CODCon Open Diplomacy tournaments, we've averaged a total of exactly seven boards per year. This year's installment is this weekend, and we have a legitimate chance to match that number or top it on Saturday alone.

As of right now, we have 28 people on the list of confirmed attendees. That number includes ex-pat Aash Anand, who's flying in from Denver; Eric and Danny Grinnel, who are driving up from Kentucky; and Ben Johnson and Zach Moore, who are driving down from Wisconsin or Minnesota, I'm not really sure where. Ben lived in Madison, I think, when he attended CODCon the first time in 2013. But I'm pretty sure he's in Minnesota now. Maybe.

Here's the latest news from the Weasels.

CODCon in T-12
Calling all Loose Cannons! Our ninth annual CODCon Open Diplomacy tournament tips off in 12 days.
Now, if you get the Loose Cannon reference, then you've been around for a while and we don't need to give you the hard sell. You know firsthand how much fun our little tournament in the western suburbs is because you've undoubtedly been there before. But we do need you to check the list of confirmed attendees and let us know whether your name should be on it.

For those of you who don't get the reference, please consider joining us April 11-12 at the Student Resource Center at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, 425 W. Fawell Blvd. Over the years, we've forged some great memories there. Who knows, maybe you'll play a starring role in the next one.

Lots of big news this week. Enjoy!

Moot Preregistration Is Now Open
Hroom, Hroom! You know what that call means. The Weasels are gathering, and you have been summoned. Weasel Moot IX will be June 13-14 in the Atrium at the University of Illinois-Chicago. Housing is available in the attached dorm, but only if you preregister, which you may do now.

You can get a single room at the dorm for $41 per night or share a double for $30. (In either case, you'll be sharing a bathroom with another room.) The website lists other housing options for those who are done with dorm-style living.

We're back, sort of right on time, with the latest news from the Weasels.

In Like a Rusty Flynn
It takes resilience to play this game. Persistence doesn't hurt either. Case in point, Nelson Flynn. He rediscovered the game and connected with us last summer after reading the Grantland article. But in three rounds at Weasel Moot and another game at the Pyle a couple of weeks later, he was eliminated in 1903, 1906, 1904 and 1904. Not a warm welcome back. At Saturday's game in Downers Grove, however, he was in like, well, Flynn. Check out the game summary.

The Weekly Weasel -- Week of March 2

Hello, and welcome to another edition of the Weekly Weasel. Before we begin, let me apologize for my recent failure to meet the publishing standard for this newsletter, which we boldly incorporated into its title.

Lately, the schedule has been erratic. That's because the past two months have been a whirlwind. My schedule should calm down, at least until next month, when CODCon will be the first of three straight weekend events for me. (The other two are work related.) But until then, I should get back to my normal weekly publishing schedule.
So, read on for the latest news from the Weasels.

Finally, an Actual Weasel Moot Update
Okay, sometime this weekend, we expect to roll out the website for Weasel Moot IX. It's going to be June 13-14 at the University of Illinois-Chicago. Housing at the dorm will cost only $30 per night. Wahoo! We'll have the usual two rounds on Saturday and one on Sunday, and for those who come in early, we'll plan something fun to do in Little Italy or Greek Town, both of which are within a mile of the campus.

It's going to be a fun time. Get in on your calendar now, and you'll be able to register in short order. Hope to see you there!

The Weekly Weasel -- Week of Feb. 16

We're back after an unscheduled, work-induced hiatus. Read on for the latest news from the Weasels.

As mentioned in recent issues, one of Matt Sundstrom's resolutions for the New Year was to develop a ratings system for the Weasels. His work is complete and very impressive. We're still figuring out the best way to house and display his work, which begins with the adoption of the Sum of Square system for league play in Season Six (2010-11). In the meantime, I thought I'd share some of the ancillary analysis made possible by the project.

Let's start with our top five board-toppers in terms of topping percentage, based on a minimum of seven games played. They are:

I'm way late and pressed for time, so this will be another brief one...

Plug Pulled
We couldn't get a seventh player (or even a firm commitment from a sixth) for tomorrow's scheduled game in Humboldt Park, so we pulled the plug on it earlier today. Looks like you'll have to wait another month for an opportunity to play a Saturday house game this season. Dan Burgess' Downers Grove game on March 7 is close to filling. We need one more to make it happen, and two more to free Dan for his preferred hosting duties.

Bar Games Keep Filling
Our Red Wednesday games continue to draw well. We have eight for next week's tilt at the Red Lion, including three more first-time Weasels. Four to six more, and we can field two boards. Who's in?

It's a slow news week from the Weasels.
Players Needed
Sign-ups for our two February games have been sluggish. John Gramila will host our first Saturday house game of the season on February 7 at his home in Humboldt Park, beginning at 11 a.m. ... if we can find six more players. Then on the 11th, it's back to the Red Lion in Lincoln Square for another Red Wednesday. That one will start at 6:30 p.m. and go until no later than 11. We have four signed up.

Check your calendars, then sign up for one or both. CODCon is right around the corner, so now's the time to tune up.

Here's the latest news from the Weasels.

Keep Calm and Top the Board
When I woke up last Wednesday morning, 14 people were signed up for Red Wednesday that evening. Players started jumping ship around Noon, and by 6:30, we were hoping a seventh would show. Fortunately, Edwin Kite, a British national and first-time Weasel, strolled into the Red Lion at around 7:15 to rescue the game. Better late than never.

Kite went on to top the board, which featured three other first-time Weasels, including Fred Townsend, a prolific player and writer from the 1980s postal hobby. The four new Weasels ran our Season 10 recruiting total to 20, just one short of the total for all of Season 9.

Check out the game summary.
