Man at Work
Like a boomerang, Australian Peter McNamara keeps coming back to Chicago. His third trip here in the past nine months was the charm, as this time, he left with the CODCon tournament championship. And a vegemite sandwich.

McNamara soloed in the first round as Austria and posted 15 centers as England in the time-limited third round to win the five-board tournament going away. Check out tournament director Dan Burgess' report for the full results.

Just a short issue this week, as I have to pack.

Black Jack!
Our head count for this weekend's CODCon Open is 21. Can we pad that number with a few more of you to give us a better shot at hitting three boards in one or two of the rounds? Check out the list of attendees and more information. One neat thing about the list of attendees is all the new names on it. We have people traveling to the event from Ames, Madison and Peoria, plus three locals who haven't yet played tournament Diplomacy and another who hasn't played in a tournament since the second Open back in 2008. You may actually need to read those CODCon name badges this year.

Not much going on except for CODCon, which is just 11 days away. Read on.

Like Winter, CODCon Is Coming
We're expecting at least four travelers for CODCon this year, including one from Austin and another all the way from the Bay Area. Of course in past years, we've entertained out-of-towners from Alaska and even Paris; the Bay Area is practically our backyard by comparison. Still, we're excited about our guests. If you're on the fence, how about joining us for a round or more to ensure a strong local turnout?

DiplomacyCast Double-Play
Our friends at DiplomacyCast, the hardest working Podcast in the Diplomacy hobby, produced two episodes in the past week. The first, Episode 22, is a tribute to Allan Calhamer. The second is a wide-ranging installment that reviews a new tournament in Los Angeles, shares some rare but effective openings, and empties a mailbag filled with well written and thought-provoking emails. Check out DiplomacyCast online or at iTunes.

Stranger Danger!
"Villains who twirl their moustaches are easy to spot," Captain Picard once told Lt. Worf. (Yes, I'm working a Star Trek reference into a Diplomacy e-newsletter. Nerd overload.) Not so much, the ones who wear smiles and carry candy in their pockets. Game No. 208, played Saturday at my place in Little Italy, was our second straight with a pair of pre-teens. One of them topped the board, and the other learned a valuable life lesson about taking candy from strangers. Check out the game summary.

It's Nature
We conducted our own nature vs. nurture experiment last Saturday at Tony Prokes' home in Des Plaines as Junior Woodchucks Kevin O'Kelley (12) and Calum Mitchell (11) joined us for a time-limited game of Diplomacy. Clearly, it wasn't years of nurturing that guided their knives into their allies' backs, so it must be in their nature. See how the young lads did, and get game reaction from observer Pete McNamara (Calum's stepdad) and me.

Rest in Peace, with Support from All of Us
The big news, of course, is that Allan B. Calhamer, the father of Diplomacy, passed away last Monday. He was 81. Many of you got the chance to see him last August at the World Diplomacy Championship at Weasel Moot VI. I'll never forget the ovation we gave him.

Anyway, War Weasel Nate Cockerill and I both posted tributes to him. Here is Nate's; mine is here. I've also provided links to his obituaries in the Sun-Times and the Tribune. The Tribune reporter contacted the Sneak for a reaction to the news. Chris Davis and I are both quoted in the article. Both articles also draw from Ted McClelland's 2009 profile of Mr. Calhamer in Chicago Magazine.

Hopes, Dreams Go Sweepin' down the Plains
When the wind swept down the plains of last week's game at Guthrie's Tavern in Wrigleyville, it carried the aspirations of native Oklahoman Sam Bassett and his fellow Westerners with it. Check out the game report to see what happened and which Season One vet returned to the table for only the second time in seven years.
