The Weekly Weasel -- Week of May 19

Here's the latest news from the Weasels.

Last Hurrah?
We were hoping to get a tune-up in for Prime Weasel Nate Cockerill before sending him on his merry way to the World Diplomacy Championship at DixieCon in Chapel Hill, but we need three more players to make that happen. Who's up for an evening of Dip and Drinks at the Red Lion on Wednesday? If I weren't about to leave my family for four days, I'd gladly play.

If it seems like you just received an issue of the Weekly Weasel, that's because you did. Time flies, but typically not this fast. We were late last week, but we're back on track now. Here's the latest news from the Weasels.

Last Hurrah...for One of Us
When Nate and I road trip to Chapel Hill next week for the World Diplomacy Championship at DixieCon, I'll be abandoning my wife and sons for four days. Nate is an untamed bachelor. So guess which one of us scheduled a final tune-up at the Red Lion for the night before we leave? I'll give you a hint: It was Nate.

Help send Nate off with an evening of Dip and Drinks beginning at 6:30 on May 21. But please don't keep him out too late. It would be nice if he could help with the driving this time...

We need five more to make the game happen. Check out the listing for more information.

Let's Play Dos
Seven of the club's most interesting players gathered in Glenview last Saturday to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a game of Dip. Turns out the game wasn't nearly as interesting as them, so they called a draw and started up another one. Check out the results from Games 244 and 245.

Here's the latest news from the Weasels.

Three Months 'til Weasel Moot
Weasel Moot tips off in just about three months. Make your plans to join us July 26-27 at the Hampton Inn and Suites, 33 W Illinois St in the heart of Chicago's bustling River North neighborhood. Our room block for the event expired on Monday, but if you act quickly, you may still be able to get the discounted rate. Call 312-832-0330 to reserve your room. Try mentioning Weasel Moot 2014 for the discounted room rate of $189 per night. We've got some other housing options listed on the website, including Airbnb, so check it out.

Two rounds on Saturday, July 26, one on Sunday the 27th. We're planning an outing for Friday night the 25th, possibly to the Blue Frog's Local 22 karaoke bar, which is right by the Hampton Inn. Should be a fun time.

Check out the site and go ahead and preregister. You'll save $5.

Here's the latest news from the Weasels.

Reserve Your Weasel Moot Room While It's Cheap...
...Relatively speaking. Our room block at the Hampton Inn and Suites, along with the discounted room rate, for the July 26-27 Weasel Moot expires next Monday. To reserve your room, call 312-832-0330. Mention Weasel Moot 2014 to get our room rate of $189 per night. On the 29th, that rate will go up as much as $20 per night. Of course, you're welcome to search for other housing options. There are plenty in the city, and we're not on the hook for any of the rooms in our block at the Hampton Inn. Airbnb is one good option for finding housing. There are others on the website, so check it out.

The dates again are July 26-27. The Hampton Inn is in the heart of River North. It's a great location, and it should be a fun event. You can find all the info you need on the website, but briefly, it will be a three-round tournament with the best two rounds counting for score. We'll have two rounds on Saturday and one on Sunday. On Friday, we plan to organize a social event -- perhaps an outing to the Blue Frog's Local 22 karaoke bar, which is right by the Hampton Inn.

Check out the site and go ahead and preregister. You'll save $5.

Youth Is Served
The club's Old Guard is not quite ready to fade away, but the Young Guns claimed four of the top seven spots in last weekend's CODCon Open, including the championship. Kudos to John Gramila who fell just short of a championship at Weasel Moot in 2011. This time, he was on the right side of another close finish. Check out our CODCon coverage.

CODCon Is This Weekend!
Speaking of CODCon, who's ready? The Weasels' longest running tournament (by a couple of months...) returns this weekend for an eighth installment, and we hope many of you will come out for at least a round.

The three-round tournament will be April 5-6 at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn. You can find more information about our tournament, including the schedule, here. Learn more about the CODCon convention here. When you decide to come, be sure to respond on Meetup here.

Brand Pulls off an Italian Job
Well, the World Diplomacy Championship at Weasel Moot X happened, and if you missed it, go ahead and kick yourself. You missed a fantastic weekend.

We had 93 players on 52 boards over the five rounds. Five games ended in solos, and three of those were Italian. Italy also topped the top board.

Ex-pat Peter Yeargin was the only Weasel who contended for the world championship on Sunday. The championship game was won by Canadian Chris Brand.

We played three games of Diplomacy in nine days, and that's not even the big news this week. The big news, of course, is...

The Countdown is in Single Digits!
Folks, the World Diplomacy Championship at Weasel Moot X is next week. The fun will kick off with the Welcome Party Thursday night. We're still hammering out the details, but the party definitely will be from 8 to 10 p.m. in the South Loop. Afterward, there will be a trail of tears to karaoke (and more tears).

The tournament starts bright and early on Friday. Board call will be at 9:45 a.m. There will be two rounds on Friday (9:45 a.m. and 6 p.m.), two on Saturday (9:45 a.m. and 6 p.m.), and one on Sunday (8:45 a.m.). The best three of five rounds will count for score. The best three of four rounds will determine the seven players who will compete for the title of world champion on Sunday.
