The Weekly Weasel -- Week of May 4

Here's the latest news from the Weasels.

Seis de Mayo
Seven of the most interesting men in the world will gather on Wednesday at the Red Lion for a bonus Diplomacy bar game. The guest of honor is Charlie Sweet from Milwaukee, an active player on who is in town for a technology conference. (Ex-pat Peter Yeargin is here for the same conference and may make a cameo.) If you're around on Wednesday, stop by the Lion for a bite and a beer. Interesting men prefer to play Dip in front of an audience.

Here's the latest news from the Weasels on a slow news week.

Players Needed!
We've scheduled two games for next week, but we need players for both. First up is a bonus bar game at the Red Lion on May 6. A visiting online player will be in town from Milwaukee, and he's asked us to organize a game for him. We need three more players to fill the board. Who's in?

Then on the 9th, Dan Burgess will host another game at his place in Downers Grove. Two have signed up so far, along with Dan, who will play reluctantly if necessary but prefers to host. That's Mother's Day weekend, so keep that in mind, but hey, maybe you'll be doing your wife or mother a favor by leaving the house for a full day on Saturday!

Last Friendly House Game
Dan Burgess will host the last friendly house game before Moot on May 9 at his home in Downers Grove. The game will start at 11 a.m. and end when it ends. As always, Dan would prefer not to play so he can focus on serving you food and drink. Let's keep him happy and fill this board.

Here's what's going on with the Weasels.

Matt's Con
Like a comet or a locust or maybe a weird STD, you can count on Matt Sundstrom winning CODCon every three years. He won his first CODCon title in 2009 after finishing 2 points behind champion Mike French the previous year. Then he won again in 2012 on the strength of a Turkish solo. And last weekend at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, he won yet again. This time, he didn't even need the Turkish solo; he could have won with his other two results.

Hey, CODCon is this weekend, and here's what's going on with the Weasels.

Supersizing CODCon
Over the eight previous CODCon Open Diplomacy tournaments, we've averaged a total of exactly seven boards per year. This year's installment is this weekend, and we have a legitimate chance to match that number or top it on Saturday alone.

As of right now, we have 28 people on the list of confirmed attendees. That number includes ex-pat Aash Anand, who's flying in from Denver; Eric and Danny Grinnel, who are driving up from Kentucky; and Ben Johnson and Zach Moore, who are driving down from Wisconsin or Minnesota, I'm not really sure where. Ben lived in Madison, I think, when he attended CODCon the first time in 2013. But I'm pretty sure he's in Minnesota now. Maybe.

Here's the latest news from the Weasels.

CODCon in T-12
Calling all Loose Cannons! Our ninth annual CODCon Open Diplomacy tournament tips off in 12 days.
Now, if you get the Loose Cannon reference, then you've been around for a while and we don't need to give you the hard sell. You know firsthand how much fun our little tournament in the western suburbs is because you've undoubtedly been there before. But we do need you to check the list of confirmed attendees and let us know whether your name should be on it.

For those of you who don't get the reference, please consider joining us April 11-12 at the Student Resource Center at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, 425 W. Fawell Blvd. Over the years, we've forged some great memories there. Who knows, maybe you'll play a starring role in the next one.

Lots of big news this week. Enjoy!

Moot Preregistration Is Now Open
Hroom, Hroom! You know what that call means. The Weasels are gathering, and you have been summoned. Weasel Moot IX will be June 13-14 in the Atrium at the University of Illinois-Chicago. Housing is available in the attached dorm, but only if you preregister, which you may do now.

You can get a single room at the dorm for $41 per night or share a double for $30. (In either case, you'll be sharing a bathroom with another room.) The website lists other housing options for those who are done with dorm-style living.

We're back, sort of right on time, with the latest news from the Weasels.

In Like a Rusty Flynn
It takes resilience to play this game. Persistence doesn't hurt either. Case in point, Nelson Flynn. He rediscovered the game and connected with us last summer after reading the Grantland article. But in three rounds at Weasel Moot and another game at the Pyle a couple of weeks later, he was eliminated in 1903, 1906, 1904 and 1904. Not a warm welcome back. At Saturday's game in Downers Grove, however, he was in like, well, Flynn. Check out the game summary.

The Weekly Weasel -- Week of March 2

Hello, and welcome to another edition of the Weekly Weasel. Before we begin, let me apologize for my recent failure to meet the publishing standard for this newsletter, which we boldly incorporated into its title.

Lately, the schedule has been erratic. That's because the past two months have been a whirlwind. My schedule should calm down, at least until next month, when CODCon will be the first of three straight weekend events for me. (The other two are work related.) But until then, I should get back to my normal weekly publishing schedule.
So, read on for the latest news from the Weasels.

Finally, an Actual Weasel Moot Update
Okay, sometime this weekend, we expect to roll out the website for Weasel Moot IX. It's going to be June 13-14 at the University of Illinois-Chicago. Housing at the dorm will cost only $30 per night. Wahoo! We'll have the usual two rounds on Saturday and one on Sunday, and for those who come in early, we'll plan something fun to do in Little Italy or Greek Town, both of which are within a mile of the campus.

It's going to be a fun time. Get in on your calendar now, and you'll be able to register in short order. Hope to see you there!
