Simon says first place

Written by

In just his second game of Diplomacy, Simon Marcelis of Belgium vaulted into first place for Season 7 with a board top in Game No. 157, played last night at Emmett's Alehouse in Downers Grove. The game was one of two in a night that featured six more new recruits for the Weasels.

Games go to Cock and the General

We were back at Guthrie's Tavern in Wrigleyville last night for an evening of Dip and Drinks. Despite having four players drop during the week, we still managed 13, which was good enough for two boards, with me pulling double duty. And our outstanding recruiting year continued, with five more new players. Special thanks to Peter Lokken, Ben DiPaola, Mike Morrison and Nate Cockerill for bringing them in.

The song of people dying

Written by
"I don't listen when they tell me what's going to happen if I keep attacking them. That's just the song of people dying."
--Ben DiPaola

That quote has nothing to do with Game No. 154, which was played at my home in Little Italy yesterday. Ben uttered it while we were smoking cigars on the patio following a long, grueling game, in reference to a game at Weasel Moot. But I like it so much that I'm using it here.

Actually, we didn't have a whole lot of dying in Game No. 154. It was a pretty well balanced game that saw the fortunes of several powers rise and fall and sometimes rise again. As late as 1906, I was topping the board with only seven centers. We didn't see our first elimination till 1912.

The Spectacular Conception

Written by

Hats off to Tony Prokes for a great recruiting weekend at Conception, the small gaming convention at the College of Dupage in Glen Ellyn.

Billed as our Season 7 Kickoff Weekend, the festivities started with an intro game Saturday morning. In addition to Tony, new Weasel Ulysses Peterson returned to the table with two friends in tow, Mike Weinstein and Carlos Otero. Those four were joined by three members of the Havelka family: Chuck and son Sam, from Memphis, and Chuck's brother John, who's local. They played four game years. The final center counts were:

And they're off!

Season 7 kicked off last night at the Red Lion in Lincoln Square with a novice game organized by Nate Cockerill. Nate and fellow new Sneakers John Gramila and Peter Lokken did an outstanding recruiting job. The game featured five new Weasels, two of whom were firstime players. In addition, a sixth potential member shadowed Nate for the first two game years before leaving for his Magic the Gathering Meetup in a different room.

And get this: The five new Weasels included two, count 'em, two women.
