facts about us

#Season 14

Our Diplomacy league is the most active in North America. We average more than two league games per month in addition to Tournament play. We score all of our games using the Sum of Squares scoring system, and each player's best three scores count toward the season standings. We are known for our fierce competition, strong traditions, upstanding character and trustworthiness, and the propensity for Turkey to open to Armenia.

Player Elimination Frequencies

I've never watched an episode of Lost, so why start now? Here are elimination frequencies for every player who has played at least five games with us. There are differences between this table and the player ratings I posted earlier today, but as you can imagine, the less often you're eliminated, the better your average supply center count is likely to be.

If we ever get seven players with zeros, they should have a playoff!
# Jim O'Kelley 2010-02-03 21:20
After looking over this table, I realized that it included Game No. 55, which was a non-standard, six-player game. So, I removed that game, which affected the game counts and elimination percentages for Matt, Kevin, Nick and Greg, and reposted the table.

Note that the Player Ratings included Game No. 55 in the game count but not in the average center calculation. I corrected the game counts in that table.

You don't watch Lost?!!??!
-1 # Jim O'Kelley 2010-02-04 12:44
Seriously, is it called Lost because of the characters or the viewers? Or both?
# Thom Comstock 2010-02-04 14:24
I'd watch Lost if your sister guest starred.

I wonder what the longest running non-eliminated streak is...?

It would have to be at least 8, right?
-1 # Jim O'Kelley 2010-02-04 23:16
Eric Brown went nine games before his first elimination. Christian MacDonald did him one better by going 10 games. Those are the best streaks that I'm aware of.

I'd like to note that this table is TOTAL BULLSHIT. :-|

Why is not getting eliminated good? The table should be in reverse order, as the wise people who know their position is undefendable get out while the gettings good.

And again, any ranking systems is just a way of sorting a bunch of losing scores. The only score that will EVER count is 18 centers. :sigh:

Not that I've ever won a game of Diplomacy.

This table isn't a ranking system, but I agree with your point. The victory conditions for Diplomacy are so difficult to achieve that people who care about such things are forced to invent other methods for measuring success.

I doubt there will ever be a rating system that satisfies everyone. I know our stats committee (Chris Davis, Eric Brown and Matt Sundstrom) have kicked various ideas around. Personally, I'd rather see them go in the direction of a "merit badge" system.

I'd like to see a system that recognizes players for various achievements, both good and bad. Hosting games, for example. Various thresholds for games played, topping a certain number of boards, soloing, soloing twice, maybe even a Purple Heart for 10 eliminations. You'd be the only person with this badge, Greg! :P

If our committee designs a good rating system, I'll be the first to cheer them. But I'd rather they design a merit-badge system.

I'd be willing to be stranded on a desert island with his sister

Are losses to a solo being counted as eliminations? They should be.

I'm not sure. I don't think so. I'd have to check the query. I think you'e right that they should be included, although we've had so few solos that the numbers wouldn't change significantly. Anyway, if they are not being included, I think I can modify the query to include them.
