The Weasels introduced the South Loop to our brand of bar room Diplomacy last Thursday at the Scout, a popular watering hole at 1301 S. Wabash. The event--dubbed Thunder Thursday in honor of the Norse God of Thunder--was the first offering of our new standing game in the Bar Room Brawl Series. Thunder Thursdays will be held on the fourth Thursday of every month, complementing Red Wednesdays, which will continue to be held on the second Wednesday of every month at the Red Lion in Lincoln Square.

The inaugural Thunder Thursday, our club's 359th game, ended by time limit after the Fall 1906 turn in the following center counts:

Austria (Kevin O'Kelly): 2; 1.538 points.
England (Matt Sundstrom): 1; 0.385 points.
France (Brandon Fogel): 8; 24.615 points.
Germany (Jake Trotta): 9; 31.154 points.
Italy (Ted McClelland): 3; 3.462 points.
Russia (Currey Dorris): 1; 0.385 points.
Turkey (Chris Swope): 10; 38.462 points.

Swope was playing his first game with the Weasels. We expect he'll be back.

The supply center chart is here. Players, how about some endgame statements?

Short version:

Flawless AT in East capitalizes on early, hard Italian move west. Like, three foreign armies on the boot within two years flawless. Turkey then DEVASTATINGLY stab Austria.

Late game scramble comes down to Russian supporting Turkey, over Germany, into Moscow for the victory in the game's final season.

Big takeaway:

Chris, who topped with Turkey here, is an old college buddy of mine and played excellently. This was not a newbie fluke- Turkey earned it with a huge stab. His reasoning for the stab, which was the quote of the night (Brandon correct me if I've phrased this wrong):

"I figured since Austria had done so much for me, it was time that I take advantage of that."

Well done, Chris.

I wasn’t feeling great so I helped Chris with rules adjudication and left early. A few comments:

1. I loved the location. It isn’t as comfortable as the Red Lion but it is so much easier for me to get to. I hope we keep these southside games up.

2. Chris was impressive. Probably the most impressive newbie I have seen since Mick Johnson. I offered no tactical or strategic choices and he made excellent choices on his own. If he becomes an active player, everyone should watch out.
