Even during the brief off-season, there's still news to report. Read on for the latest from the Weasels.
Season Opener Scheduled
Season 10 will tip off September 10 at the Red Lion in Lincoln Square. We're hoping for two boards. The games will begin at 6:30 and end no later than 11.
The 10th is the ninth anniversary of our club's founding. We played our very first game on September 10 in 2005, so there's that to celebrate. The event also will serve as our Prime Weasel's homecoming. Nate Cockerill has been recovering from a serious illness on his family's farm in Ohio. He'll be back for the season opener after missing both the Moot and the Pyle, so there's that on top of that. Plus we're hoping to welcome some new recruits from GenCon. More on that in a moment.
So, there's a lot to celebrate. I hope you'll join us.
Sorry I'm late. Old friend Andy Marshall is in town. Andy, who lives in Maryland, is an old postal hobby guy who used to be active with the Potomac Tea and Knife Society. He doesn't play much dip anymore, but he was the guy who organized and ran the two tournaments that really hooked me on the face-to-face hobby and inspired me to form our club -- the 2003 North American Diplomacy Championship and the 2005 World Diplomacy Championship, both of which were hosted by the PTKSers at their signature event, Tempest in a Teapot. When we launched our tournaments in 2007, we modeled them after Andy's events.
Anyway, he and I had a long dinner last night at Rosebud Prime, and tonight, he, Meghan and I went to Francesca's on Taylor. So, I've been busy.
Here's the first Weekly Weasel in the era of our Alpha Weasel theta. All hail John Gramila!
When Matt Sundstrom swept our tournaments in 2009, we sort of figured no one would ever duplicate that feat. We figured wrong. Congratulations to John Gramila on following up his CODCon championship with a 24-point win at Moot. For all the coverage, click here.
Be Like Jim
One topic that dominated conversations all weekend long was my impressive wardrobe. If you'd like to own a Weasels warrior shirt of your own, head over to our online store. Every second you delay is a lost opportunity to look good.
Slow news week, so this will be brief.
Under Four Weeks 'til Weasel Moot
Folks, Weasel Moot tips off in 24 days. That will be here before you know it, so make your plans to join us now. Then check out the event page on Facebook. We'll be right downtown in the heart of Chicago's bustling River North neighborhood at the Hampton Inn and Suites, 33 W Illinois. Call 312-832-0330 to reserve your room or visit our website for other housing options, including Airbnb.
This year's event will feature two rounds on Saturday, July 26, and one on Sunday the 27th. We're planning an outing for Friday night the 25th, possibly to the Blue Frog's Local 22 karaoke bar, which is right by the Hampton Inn. Should be a fun time. For travelers who arrive early enough, I've got four box seats at Wrigley Field for the Cubs and Cardinals. First pitch is at 3:05. So far, one of the tix is spoken for, and another is under questionable claim.
Check out the site and go ahead and preregister. You'll save $5.
Here's the latest news from the Weasels.
Dude Looks Like a Lady
We weren't sure what we'd get when the mysteriously named Meetup recruit walked through the door of the Red Lion last Tuesday, but we were all expecting a dude. Boy were we surprised.
We were even more surprised half an hour later when Nate Cockerill and I realized that neither one of us had actually recruited Don Glass to be our seventh. Fortunately a familiar face bailed us out, and after she topped the board, we had to tip her, too. Get the full story in the game report.
Here's the latest news from the Weasels.
Dude?!? It's Tuesday!
Remember that guy who would walk into your dorm room and ask if you wanted to party? You'd be like, "No, Man, I have to study."
Then he'd say, "Dude?!? It's Tuesday!"
Well, same thing only Diplomacy. Who's in for an evening of Dip and Drinks at the Red Lion next Tuesday, June 17, at 6:30 p.m.?
Not much new to report, but here we are again anyway.
Join us for Weasel Moot
Weasel Moot will be here in 53 days. Have you made your plans to join us? Now's the time to do what you need to do to clear your schedule for July 26-27. We'll be right downtown this year in the heart of Chicago's bustling River North neighborhood at the Hampton Inn and Suites, 33 W Illinois. Call 312-832-0330 to reserve your room or visit our website for other housing options, including Airbnb.
I'm still recovering from last weekend's World Diplomacy Championship in Chapel Hill, so this issue will be brief. Sleep beckons.
Haver Wins World Championship
We haven't yet seen the final standings or numbers from last weekend's WDC, but they'll be impressive. The event fielded 40 boards over the four rounds. Thomas Haver of Columbus, Ohio, posted one of the two solos en route to winning the championship. Dan Lester of the United Kingdom, the other soloist, finished second.
Your Weasels delegation fared less well, I'm afraid, but we all had a great time. And the news isn't all bad. We did manage to come home with the winning (also the only) bid for the 2016 World Diplomacy Championship, so there's that. Right now, we're focused on this year's Weasel Moot, but we expect to have all the details for 2016 hammered out in time for next year's WDC in Italy.
