The Weekly Weasel -- Week of Aug. 11

Sorry I'm late. Old friend Andy Marshall is in town. Andy, who lives in Maryland, is an old postal hobby guy who used to be active with the Potomac Tea and Knife Society. He doesn't play much dip anymore, but he was the guy who organized and ran the two tournaments that really hooked me on the face-to-face hobby and inspired me to form our club -- the 2003 North American Diplomacy Championship and the 2005 World Diplomacy Championship, both of which were hosted by the PTKSers at their signature event, Tempest in a Teapot. When we launched our tournaments in 2007, we modeled them after Andy's events.

Anyway, he and I had a long dinner last night at Rosebud Prime, and tonight, he, Meghan and I went to Francesca's on Taylor. So, I've been busy.

The Weekly Weasel -- Week of Aug. 4

It's Pyle Week. Read on for the latest news from the Weasels.

One Game More
Season Nine opened way back in September with a rare Friday night game at my place in Little Italy. It opened on Friday the 13th, no less, and perhaps that helps to explain both the Mike Morrison board-top and the seven-way draw. Twelve days later, in the season's second game, Myth Chaser Nate Cockerill captured the elusive bar game solo.

Twenty-six more games followed, including two more seven-way draws. And now here we are, with one more to play, and still the field chases the Myth Chaser needing a solo to catch him. One more game is all that stands between Nate Cockerill and a second straight Weasel of the Year title. One Game More.

If you can't be there to chase Beefy on Saturday, then follow along with the hashtag #PyleOn.

Here's the first Weekly Weasel in the era of our Alpha Weasel theta. All hail John Gramila!

Sweep!
When Matt Sundstrom swept our tournaments in 2009, we sort of figured no one would ever duplicate that feat. We figured wrong. Congratulations to John Gramila on following up his CODCon championship with a 24-point win at Moot. For all the coverage, click here.

Be Like Jim
One topic that dominated conversations all weekend long was my impressive wardrobe. If you'd like to own a Weasels warrior shirt of your own, head over to our online store. Every second you delay is a lost opportunity to look good.

It's Moot Week! Read on for the latest news from the Weasels.

#SummonTheWeasels
Weasel Moot VIII is this weekend, and so far, 26 players have answered the summons. (Hroom, Hroom!) That number includes seven travelers, four of whom are first-time Mooters.

Check out the list of confirmed attendees, and if your name isn't on it but should be, let me know.

I'll be out of town on business most of next week, so just to be safe, why don't you savor this issue as if it's the last you'll get before Moot Week.

#MootHappens
And speaking of, Weasel Moot is so close I can feel it sticking in my back. First stab is in 19 days. Now's the time to finalize your plans to join us at the Hampton Inn and Suites at 33 W Illinois, right in the heart of Chicago's River North neighborhood. (Call 312-832-0330 to reserve your room or visit our website for other housing options, including Airbnb.) Check out the event page on Facebook for some pretty good content posted by Prime Weasel Nate Cockerill, including a great photo of the terrace lounge where I suspect many a tall tale will be told that weekend.

This year's event will feature two rounds on Saturday, July 26, and one on Sunday the 27th. We're planning an outing for Friday night the 25th, possibly to the Blue Frog's Local 22 karaoke bar, which is right by the Hampton Inn. Should be a fun time. For travelers who arrive early enough on Friday, I've got four box seats at Wrigley Field for the Cubs and Cardinals. First pitch is at 3:05. So far, only one of the tix has been claimed by a legitimate traveler. I've got questionable claims from one of our favorite Cheeseheads and a displaced Buckeye. I'd gladly bump them for honest travelers, so speak up if you want to catch this game. The tickets are free, and the seats are great.

Check out the site and go ahead and preregister. You'll save $5.

Here's the latest news from the Weasels.

Dude Looks Like a Lady
We weren't sure what we'd get when the mysteriously named Meetup recruit walked through the door of the Red Lion last Tuesday, but we were all expecting a dude. Boy were we surprised.

We were even more surprised half an hour later when Nate Cockerill and I realized that neither one of us had actually recruited Don Glass to be our seventh. Fortunately a familiar face bailed us out, and after she topped the board, we had to tip her, too. Get the full story in the game report.

Here's the latest news from the Weasels.

Players Wanted
Big week this week with two games scheduled, but we need players to make them happen. We only have four for tomorrow night's tilt at the Red Lion in Lincoln Square. We need three -- but preferably four because one of the players is a first-time Meetup guy -- more to make the game happen. We'll keep it open for now. If we don't fill it by early tomorrow afternoon, we'll pull the plug. (There's also talk about rescheduling for Wednesday, so if that would interest you, speak up.)

The second game is a Noon start on Saturday at Josh Heffernan's home in Logan Square. We have six for that one, so it should fill. Speak up soon if you want to play.

Here's the latest news from the Weasels.

Dude?!? It's Tuesday!
Remember that guy who would walk into your dorm room and ask if you wanted to party? You'd be like, "No, Man, I have to study."

Then he'd say, "Dude?!? It's Tuesday!"

Well, same thing only Diplomacy. Who's in for an evening of Dip and Drinks at the Red Lion next Tuesday, June 17, at 6:30 p.m.?
