Bassett Tapped for Royale

Member Articles

Greg Duenow, the fifth seed for Saturday's Weasel Royale, has sent his regrets. He'll be unable to make the trip from Toledo for the game. We hope to see him at Weasel Moot.

Duenow's resignation means that Nate Cockerill and Pete McNamara each move up a seed, and Sam Bassett, who finished eighth, is now in. Mike Morrison will take Bassett's spot in the Undercard game.

Seven men enter, one man leaves

This Saturday, we're going to turn Dan Burgess' home in Downers Grove into, well, as close to a post-apocalyptic arena as we can legally get. That's right, Dan's home is going to be a veritable Thunderdome of pure Diplomacy fun.

It all starts at 11 a.m. with the power selection for our third annual Weasel Royale league championship game, which will put an exclamation point on our outstanding fifth season of Windy City Weasels Diplomacy. In reverse seed order, our seven competitors will determine the power selection order. With the order determined, the players will then choose their positions, with each getting 30 seconds to make up his mind. Once the last player sits at the table, the game will commence. And it will go until someone solos or the other players unanimously concede. Only one man can be crowned our Bull Weasel for 2010.

On our march to 100 games, we've paused periodically to recall classic games in Weasels lore. Here's our final look back, this time at Game No. 10, which was played Sept. 9, 2006, at Greg Duenow's home.

Game No. 10 featured founders Jim O'Kelley and Scott Yahne, Greg and Thom Comstock from the class of Game No. 3, Paul Pignotti and Large Small playing in their second games, and a newcomer named Michael Martinez. Enjoy.

The line-up for the Windy City Weasels’ 10th Diplomacy game, held September 9 at Greg Duenow’s apartment, was as follows:

Along the march to 100 games, we've paused periodically to recall classic games in Weasels lore. This time, we'll look at Game No. 9, which introduced to the group future stalwarts Matt Sundstrom, Paul Pignotti and Kevin O'Kelly.

This game is also significant in that it took place at our first season-ending gala at Eric Brown's home in Wayne. The season-ending celebration at his place has become one of our club's favorite traditions. Back then, the Pyle was actually the Moot, so this event, technically, was both Weasel Pyle I and Weasel Moot 0.

Anyway, here's my report from Game No. 9, played August 12, 2006. Enjoy.

We just held our 90th game, another landmark on the march to 100. So here's another look back at a classic Weasels game. This one was played at Greg Duenow's girlfriend's apartment on April 29, 2006. The game resulted in our club's first two-way draw, but it is more famous in club lore for how we arrived at that result. At the time, we referred to the chain of events as the Bonnie Situation.

No Stabbing Eric – A Game No. 6 Report

Founded in September 2005, the Windy City Weasels Diplomacy club to
date has only one bylaw: No stabbing Eric Brown. It's a rule that in
previous games, several of us took great pleasure in violating. On
April 29 at Greg Duenow's apartment, however, things changed.

As we march toward our 100th game, we'll feature classic game reports every five games. Here's my write-up from Game No. 3, which was played Jan. 21, 2006, at my home in Chicago. Game 3 was notable because it brought to the club Christian Kline, Greg Duenow and Thom Comstock. Those three have played in a combined 81 games, and Greg and Thom helped build the club in the years before the Sneak.

Enjoy this blast from the past.

Bungle Boogie – A Game No. 3 Report

On the eve of Game No. 3, Chicago was hit by an unexpected (at least by me) snowfall. So, instead of sleeping peacefully, I spent much of the night worrying about the status of our game.
